Inside the sigma, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 559/660 and parts of it were dismantled, an Umayyad cemetery that contained c. 350 tombs of men, women and children was revealed. The nature of the tombs and the position of the interred unequivocally reflect their Muslim origins. It also seems that burials first occurred here from 700 CE onwards and it therefore mirrors the change in the function of the ancient civic center that happened at this time.
