About Saving the Stones

Location:Acre
Acre, one of the hundred wonders of the world, was chosen in 2001 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is a historic pearl and the capital of the Western Galilee and is located on the charming beaches of the Mediterranean Sea at the northern end of Haifa Bay.

The city is full of unique attractions and historic sites, which make it a key spot on the tourist map of Israel, drawing more than one million tourists a year.

Acre's historic and fascinating heritage has turned it into a unique meeting place of art and religion. The city covers an area of about 11 square kilometers. Its 52,000 residents reflect a unique blend of ethnic groups and religions, where Jews, Muslims, Christians, Armenians, Druze, and Bahais live in exemplary coexistence.

Many visible remains recall and tell the stories of the many renowned historical figures, nations, cultures and religious movements which have left their mark in Acre. Among these are Hellenistic and Roman remnants, the Crusader and Ottoman quarters: the El - Jazzar mosque, the underground Crusader city, the Turkish baths, the Bahai temple and more.

The colorful oriental bazaars of Acre, the city walls, the fisherman's wharf and wonderful restaurants are all part of the special attractions of the city.

Since declared a World Heritage Site it has become a veritable living laboratory for the study and practice of conserving historic sites and structures as well as researching oral history and traditional cultural aspects of the city.
