The Pisa-Akko Conservation Program
|
The Pisa-Akko Conservation Project was initiated by the Municipality of Pisa & the Old Acre Development Program, within the framework of collaborative ventures between these twin cities. Pisa shares a common period in Akko's history, and her presence in the Old City is still strongly evident.
Five architectural/engineering students from Pisa and five architectural/ engineering students from Akko and the surrounding area took part in the 10-day program. They were accompanied throughout by Pisa city architect/engineer, a Professor of restoration architecture from the University of Pisa and two tutors from the Conservation Department of the Israel Antiquities Authority.
The project aimed to conduct a physical survey and historical research of the International Conservation Center Building, as a first step toward its conservation and restoration.
The project, which also served as a catalyst for local development, included activities such as heritage classes, guided tours, cultural and social events. These provided participants with a unique opportunity to discover diverse facets of the Old City of Akko and meet its local inhabitants.
In the mornings, students took part in an historical and physical survey of the Conservation Center building. The results of their work form a basic manual for the conservation and restoration program of the Center.
In the afternoons, students served as tutors to local high school students, on survey techniques.
Evenings and weekend programs comprised a number of presentations: ethnic/social evenings in Akko, plus guided tours of Akko, Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Haifa, and other locations.
