The Summer internship
|
During summer 2009 five American students from MIT, Brandeis, Delaware and Virginia Tech joined the conservation internship. They lived in beautifully renovated building within the student village in Acre. The interns participated in an archaeological excavation on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority in corporation with the Israel Ministry of Tourism - the Old Acre Development Company. They joined a team working to uncover a new area of the 12th and 13th century Crusader city (the Latin Holy Kingdom of Jerusalem). It was during these excavations that remains of the northern fortifications of the Old City and remains of an impressive public building were discovered and documented. Though these remains were only partly uncovered, the intention is to continue with its excavation.
The intern work included physical excavation, the labeling of pottery shards found at the site, a transitional day working in the laboratory repairing the pottery found in the days preceding and, finally, documenting the architectural elements.
Following these initial days, each intern elected to take part in an individual project in the conservation of Acre. In between their work on these projects the interns participate in study tours and tutorial sessions with professional conservators.
