Underwater archaeological research is a highly developed field in Israel. Antiquities found at sea are of utmost scientific importance, as they contribute to our knowledge of the material culture, economy, commerce and seagoing activities that took place along the Israeli Mediterranean coast in antiquity.

According to the Israel Antiquities Law 1978, … "Where an antiquity is discovered in Israel, after the coming into force of this law, the antiquity and the area in which it is discovered becomes the property of the State. A person who discovers an antiquity shall notify the Director of IAA within fifteen days of the discovery". An antiquity is an object made by man before the year 1700 AD.

The poster aims to facilitate the identification of ancient finds found on the seabed. Antiquities such as the ones appearing in the poster (as well as coins, glass, metal, stone or wooden objects), should be reported to the Marine Archaeology Unit as soon as possible.

The public is invited to be an active partner in the mission of protecting and preserving the national maritime heritage of Israel.
